Unit 4: Journal 2 Noun and Verb Phrases

Unit 4: Journal 2
Write at least one of each of the noun phrases discussed in the unit (prepositional phrase, absolute phrase, and appositive phrase) and at least two of each of the verb phrases (infinitive phrase and participial phrase). You will, therefore, write at least seven sentences for this journal activity. As in the first assignment, underline the phrase in each sentence and consider its function in both as a modifier and an aspect of your writing style.

Prepositional phrase:  Calgary has a love/hate relationship with public transit but according to what I have been hearing our mayor is very much committed to improving service throughout the City.
Absolute phrase:  The bus in our subdivision is a small community shuttle so sometimes it feels intimate, like travelling with friends.
Appositive phrase:  Due to its size, sometimes the community shuttle feels claustrophobic unlike the full-size transit buses which seldom feel closed in.

Infinite phrases:  In order to save money, I try to use public transit rather taking a taxi when I go places.
In order to make sure I have enough money to last as a full-time student I must keep tight rein on my finances.
Having saved as much money as I could I quit my job to concentrate on my studies.

Unit 4 Adjective and Adverbial clauses

Module 1 Writing Activity
In your writing journal, you will begin to practice building sentences with adjective and adverbial clauses

Using the lists associated with each of these types of clauses, write at least three (3) sentences including adjective clauses and three (3) sentences including adverbial clauses. Underline the adjective and adverbial clauses. Consider their function in both as a modifier and an aspect of your writing style.

Adjective Subordinate Clauses

Stampede, which is held annually in Calgary, is a city-wide celebration with the whole city participating.

Despite it’s population of over a million people, in my opinion, Calgary is a small town pretending it is a big city.

The tree lined boulevards make Calgary, which could be a bleak city scape, quite beautiful.

Adverbial Subordinate Clauses

Although I have lived in the Calgary area for six years, I have been to Stampede only once.

I personally do not enjoy the heat and crowds at Stampeded but many people enjoy Stampede .

There should be a bylaw in Calgary which defines how many decibels a lawnmower can produce.

Unit 3: Journal 2

Module 2 Writing Activity
In your journal, continue your observations of the scene observed in journal 1.  Note several vivid action verbs that you have already used. Revise some of your sentences using action verbs and/or write 2-3 new sentences with action verbs. Try not to use any of the forms of “to be” (is, are, was, etc.).  Underline the action verbs in your sentences. Again, you will want to keep all of these sentences at hand as you do the peer reviewed writing at the end of the unit.

The older woman who appears bored by her companion as they hobble along.

The children laugh and giggle as they are herded towards the airplane by their distracted parents.

The flight attendant who confides in a co-worker how much she hates this run as it means she will not be home for three days.

Unit 3: Journal 1

Module 1 Writing Activity
Observe a scene where people are interacting.  Write 5-6 sentences describing this scene and underline the subjects of your sentences. Write a few sentences experimenting with using different types of pronouns from the tables in Unit 3.  You will want to keep all of these sentences at hand as you do the writing activities for this unit.

As we head for our departure gate I notice the assortment of people around us. The older woman who appears bored by her companion as they hobble along.  The children who laugh and giggle as they are herded towards the airplane by their distracted parents. The two teen-agers attempting to impress each other with their sophistication even though it appears this is the first time either has been away from home without adult supervision. The flight attendant who confides in a co-worker how much she hates this run as it means she will not be home for three days.
